Ductless mini-split systems have become increasingly popular in New York City apartments and homes because they provide efficient heating and cooling without requiring ductwork. However, their filters need regular cleaning to maintain performance and air quality. Unlike traditional HVAC filters that you replace, mini-split filters are reusable mesh screens that you wash and reinstall. Neglecting filter cleaning reduces airflow, forces the system to work harder, increases energy consumption, and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. Cleaning your mini-split filters every two to four weeks during heavy use takes just 15 minutes and keeps your system running at peak efficiency.
Use the remote control or wall controller to turn off the mini-split. Wait for the unit to stop completely. Some models continue running the fan for a minute after shutdown to dry the coils.
Lift the front panel of the indoor unit upward. It should click into an open position. On most models, the panel hinges up to reveal the filters sitting in front of the evaporator coil. Refer to your model's manual if the panel does not lift easily.
Slide the mesh filters out of their slots. Most mini-splits have two side-by-side filters. Handle them gently as the mesh can tear if forced. Note their orientation so you can reinstall them correctly.
Rinse the filters under lukewarm running water. For heavy buildup, soak them in warm soapy water for 10 minutes and gently scrub with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and let them air dry completely. Never reinstall wet filters.
Once dry, slide the filters back into their slots in the correct orientation. Push the front panel down until it clicks into the closed position. Turn the unit back on and verify it runs normally with good airflow.
If you notice ice on the evaporator coil behind the filters, water leaking from the indoor unit, or the system not cooling properly even with clean filters, call a mini-split technician. These symptoms indicate issues beyond filter maintenance.
Call (646) 439-4057Every 2 to 4 weeks during heavy use seasons. Monthly is sufficient during milder weather. If you have pets or live near a dusty area, lean toward every 2 weeks.
No. Running without filters allows dust and debris to coat the evaporator coil, dramatically reducing efficiency and potentially causing expensive damage that voids your warranty.
